Nanomechanics and Tribology of Thin Film Coatings (T3)- 5/15/25

Thursday, May 15, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Summary

This module seeks to give a basic introduction to Coatings Nanomechanics and Tribology. The use of coatings to modify the mechanical and tribological properties, as well as the available testing techniques and basic design rules – that should be useful both to industrial design engineers and to academic researchers – will be reviewed.

Topics

Introduction to Surface Engineering

  • Surface engineering processes: surface treatment vs. surface coating.
  • The Surface Engineering Coatings market.

Coatings Nanomechanics

  • The indentation hardness at macro, micro, and nanoscale.
  • The basics of the nanoindentation technique.
  • Typical mistakes during the measurement of coatings.
  • Advantages of modern nanoindenters: high speed nanoindentation, statistical nanoindentation technique, stress/strain curves, nanofriction and nanowear, nano-tribocorrosion, etc.

Coatings Tribology

  • Categorizations of coating wear regimes (surface property requirements; regime interactions). Difference between sliding and rolling contacts. Environmental influence: temperature, humidity, greases and lubricants, gases, vacuum.
  • Coatings tribological testing: friction, wear, adhesion, and beyond.
  • Tribological strategies to characterize and evaluate: a) single components vs. whole device; b) laboratory study vs. field study; c) accelerated tests.
  • Coating design considerations: single layer vs multilayers; H/E and H3/E2 coating design for wear modification; adhesion layers; stress management.
